On Thursday night, bettors get 5% vigorish and ties-win parlay cards on Sunday and Monday nights. |

Las Vegas Strip. Also, the Sahara features a new roller coaster called
Speed -- The Ride. The ride begins in the NASCAR Cafe, where a high-speed
launch will propel passengers along the Las Vegas Strip. |

| Stardust
Hotel
3000 Las Vegas Blvd. S. Las Vegas, NV 89109 702-732-6111 800-824-6033 |
The
Stardust Resort and Casino, a Las Vegas legend since 1958, measures one
quarter of a mile along the Las Vegas Strip. In keeping with the old Las
Vegas, the Stardust has remained an adult playground, unencumbered with
family attractions. The casino is large and filled with gamblers, not sightseers.
Rounding out the amenities is eight bars, two pools, a video arcade and
a cluster of retail shops. |
Mr. Las Vegas, Wayne Newton, is back on the Strip. Backed by a 20-piece orchestra and four strong singers, Newton delivers his greatest hits in the renamed Wayne Newton Theatre. The hotel lounge frequently hosts quality acts such as Susan McDonald and The Coasters. |
| Stratosphere
2000 Las Vegas Blvd. S. Las Vegas, NV 89104 702-380-7777 800-998-6937 www.stratlv.com |
No
one misses the Stratosphere: Its space- needle tower is visible from anywhere
in the Las Vegas valley. In fact, the 1,149-foot tower is the tallest observation
tower in America. If you want to rise above it all, it costs $6 ($4 for
Nevada residents, senior citizens and hotel guests) to take the ride to
the top of the Tower, where you'll get a sweeping view of the valley and
surrounding mountains. There are two observation decks, one inside and
one outside. For those with stomachs of steel, there are two thrill rides
at the top: the High Roller roller-coaster and the Big Shot, which shoots
upward 180 feet in 2.5 seconds, then free falls back to the launching pad.
Other hotel amenities include meeting and banquet facilities, a 200-seat
cocktail lounge and a swimming pool on the roof of the 24th floor of the
New World Tower and the Srat-O-Fair midway. |
Getting back to earth, the hotel hosts an afternoon show, now a rarity in Las Vegas, called Viva Las Vegas. After dark, the American Superstars take over in the main showroom and stage drop-dead impersonations of superstars like Madonna, Gloria Estefan and Michael Jackson, to name a few. Note that the impersonators perform live, as opposed to the lipsynch impressionists at some other shows. |
| Treasure
Island
3300 Las Vegas Blvd. S. Las Vegas, NV 89109 702-894-7111 800-944-7444 |
The
hotel fronts The Strip with a replica of an 18th-century sea village, surrounded
by rock cliffs, shrubs, palm trees and nautical artifacts, all perched
atop Buccaneer Bay, a blue-water lagoon. Two fully rigged ships - a pirate
galleon and a British frigate - moored and anchored in the bay, play out
for a mock sea battle every 90 minutes beginning in the late afternoon.
The show fills the sidewalk with onlookers, who marvel at the cannons blazing,
masts toppling, powder kegs exploding and stunt actors leaping into the
lagoon. |
The hotel's ongoing production show, Cirque du Soleil's "Mystere," is staged in a specially built, 1,500-seat theater that is typically sold out. The reason? The show is perhaps the best in town. In April 2000, the show became the longest-running Cirque du Soleil show, hitting 3,000 performances. |
